Bhutan Currency

The currency of Bhutan is called Ngultrum with currency sign Nu. It is divided into 100 smaller units called Chetrum (Ch). Ngultrum has been in existence since 1974 as an official currency after replacing the rupee at par. The latest series of Ngultrum has the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are available in denominations of Ch1, Ch5, Ch10, Ch25, Ch50 and Nu1. Ngultrum is equal in value to that of an Indian Rupee. Indian Rupee is acceptable all over Bhutan expect the denomination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100.

There are several banks and money exchange centers in Bhutan that change your local currency to Ngultrum. The exchange rate may differ in times due to fluctuation in US dollars. The ngultrum does not exchange independently with other nations' currencies but is interchangeable with the Indian rupee. Major debit and credit cards service is available in the major cities bit it is advised to carry ample cash and travel cheques for your convenience.
